The summer of 2001 is well remembered in Talkeetna for the number of bears seen in the townsite and the change in their behavior. Both Black and Grizzly bears had become habituated to dumpsters and garbage. Many tourists and locals reported having encounters with bears in the downtown and residential areas. As a reaction to the conflicts between bears and people a grassroots coalition of local residents was formed and named The Bear Necessities Coalition - Keeping Bears Wild and People Safe.
Our mission is to work, through education and action, to promote good human behavior in order to minimize conflict between people and bears in the Talkeetna area.
Our goal is to have the bears remain wild and the people remain safe in our communities.
